2023 Annual Coach Compensation Survey

 Mar 5, 2023 / By: Alex Byczko

The 2023 Checklick Compensation Survey has some great data with some new comparators that hopefully give you better insight into the compensation landscape.

Read on to learn more about this year's survey and you'll be able to download your copy of the infographic at the bottom of this post.

2023 has some wild data this year! We had 50% more respondents than last year making 2023 the biggest year yet with the most survey results. We had a moment of pride when we closed the survey this year. As always, we want to provide you with the highest resolution on the data to make sure you are empowered to make accurate budgeting decisions. We found the data skewed heavily to the right this year, so we are giving you some key comparatives to provide that grain of salt, as they say.  In this post, we'll go over our methodology, new questions, rationale, errors, and distributions.

It goes without saying, thank you to all respondents!

In a similar fashion to last year, the polled population were coaches who use Checklick.

Here are details about the survey;

  • 326 respondents
  • Survey was open to responses for 1 month
  • 224 in 2020 vs 220 in 2021 vs 217 in 2022

Our survey is distributed via email to coaches. However, this year social media came in clutch in distributing the survey to a wider audience. Sail Canada provided a huge leg up in reposting our survey link and also attaching it to their newsletter. Our survey responses have usually hovered around 220 in the last few years. This year blew those numbers out of the water and we closed the survey after 5 weeks (usually it's open for 8 weeks.)

Same as last year, we asked our standard 13 questions. Standard questions are nationality, pay, age, experience, qualifications, etc. Not much of a change this year, except for a different example response for hourly pay. We did that in hopes of getting more consistent responses and leaving it open enough for people to respond accurately.

All the questions were phrased as simple and direct as possible to reduce survey attrition.  All the questions related to demographic information (Age, Experience, Qualifications) questions could be directly compared to previous year’s surveys.

Data was collected via Google Forms.  Response distribution outputs that are provided by the application were used, however, the more significant findings came from the raw data analysis.

QUESTIONS AND RATIONALE

Compensation is a short answer currency figure. This response is cross-referenced with that respondent’s reported national currency and was then converted to Canadian Dollars. Exchange rates were determined via a Google search on March 1st, 2024. Euro to CAD was converted at $1.47 and USD to CAD was converted at $1.35.

As for the rest of the questions, some of the core questions can be directly compared to previous iterations of the Checklick Compensation Survey. The survey does still skew towards the sport of sailing especially within Canada.

ERRORS

DISTRIBUTIONS

TAKE AWAY

All questions were written in a way that allowed for simple responses. However, we are still seeing odd responses in the hourly wage question, despite adding a new example. Any written responses that are not numerical (or discernibly numerical) are deleted and marked $0.00. Volunteers are marked as $0.00. These figures are not weighed in the averages or medians. When provided an hourly range, we take the median and input that as hourly pay. Salaries are also converted to hourly pay based on an 8-hour day.

Another issue we need to clear up is respondents reporting more than one sport that they coach. Currently, multiple responses are excluded from the results.

This year, again, we are providing the averages of our distribution data in a slick-looking infographic. Check that out as we think it’s direct, informative and cuts some of the noise of how we have done this in the past.

A beyond successful survey this year, with some new comparatives that hopefully give you a better and bigger picture, was what's going on in the Checklick Sporting Community.  Stay tuned for more, because we have a lot!

We will continue to revise the survey to improve our data collection and let us know if you like our new visual format.

In our next post, we will look at the data with a finer comb. We will provide you with the same breakdowns and insights as last year. Then in a subsequent post, we will take a look at comparisons between regions and years.
